Introduction

Clarendon Surgery is a long established practice dating back to the mid-1930s.  The original practitioners were Dr Pennington and Dr Rifkin.  Dr Rifkin was one of the original Senior Practitioners in this area.  The Frank Rifkin Library at Hope Hospital is named after him.  Dr Martin Bourne and his wife Dr Joyce Bourne joined the practice in the 1960’s.  After Dr Martin Bourne resigned to become a student health doctor at the University of Manchester Dr Andrew Manasse joined the partnership.  They were joined shortly after by Dr Ben Epstein.  Dr Epstein was a Consultant Paediatrician who felt he was far too young to retire at the age of 65 years!  At a time when it was still possible he joined the practice in 1972.  Although his intention was only to stay for a short time he retired in 1988 at the age of 83 years having fallen and broken his arm.  Many of our elderly patients still remember his caring approach.  He would often phone Social Services on their behalf and was not beyond doing a bit of DIY in their house to help them out.  After his retirement Dr Tankel joined in 1988.  Dr Joyce Bourne retired in 1990. Dr Owen joined in 1991 and Dr Rafferty joined in August 2008.

The original surgery was sited in Cross Lane and Broad Street.  It moved to Denbigh Place in the mid-1970s.  The was the ground floor of a maisonette with a wooden extension.  With the wood rotting and the building literally falling apart it was finally relocated to its present site at Lance Burn Health Centre in March 1993. The Practice achieved Investors in People in March 1997. The Practice is a training practice for both GP Registrars and Medical Students. It was one of the earliest practices to have medical students attached and this dates to well before 1988. Originally there were other practices in the Health Centre but over a period of time these have been absorbed and amalgamated into this partnership.  In October 2006 the practice merged with that of Dr Bakhshi.  The practice list size as at 1st April 2009 is 8990.

 The area

The practice is situated in the inner city areas of Salford.  The practice area is quite small.  Over 90% of the patients live within 2 miles of the surgery.  The list size includes approximately 700 students and 240 pupils at Chetham’s School of Music.  The practice area extends to Deansgate.  For those who know the area there is an enormous amount  of building going on in both the city centre and the adjacent area of Salford.  It mostly consists of owner occupier flats although many of these are likely to be investment properties which will be rented out.  Thus there is a policy of gentrification of the area.

Local networks

The main local hospital is Hope Hospital.  This is situated some 3 miles from the surgery.  Some patients are referred to North Manchester General Hospital and a small number of patients are referred to Manchester Royal Infirmary for the services which are not usually available in either of the other two hospitals.   Hope Hospital is a major teaching hospital and has recently become a Foundation Trust The local PCT is Salford PCT which is co-terminous with the local authority. The practice area is well circumscribed and when patients move their domicile outwith the practice area they are removed from the list of our patients.
